The site looks vibe coded. It’s possible they just bought the trademark, quickly set up a site and hope to capitalize on the reputation of former Twitter.
The $20 and $40 early access certainly makes it seem like it. Even if that isn’t the case, time has shown that centralized social media has flaws so idealists will just stay with Mastodon while the people that want a large user base and easy of use will just use BlueSky instead. IMO there is no market aside from a possible gofundme invention exit scam.If nothing else we know this project will piss off Elon and that’s always a plus.

It may well be intended as a serious attempt but personally I’m just going to view it as trolling/a gimmick, in which case I don’t care how shit the actual platform is. Seems to be more about making a point against Musk than getting a serious userbase.

The only time this comes after the number, that I am aware of, is when you use abbreviations like USD or EUR instead of the symbol.
It’s language specific. In english it comes before the number. In many other languages it comes after.

When I read “20$” my first thought is that the person writing it didn’t pay attention in elementary school.
And being lenient about it on the web leads to the behavior leaking into the real world on things like shop signs.

Thanks! Yeah I guess it might be hard for some people, but I speak some French and Spanish and it’s not hard for me to remember to ¡use proper exclamation points in Spanish! or «use guillemets instead of quotation marks in French». This feels like the same sort of thing.

I’ll be honest Americentrism annoys me too, but we can hardly complain when we’re on lemmy.world of all places.
America is the largest Anglophone country so you can’t really complain about them being numerous on an international English-speaking audience, not exactly their fault they did a lot of baby booming in the late '40s.
And the boomers had a bunch of kids that are all tech savvy and in their 30s-40s, so you know, the primary userbase for Reddit/Twitter/Lemmy/Mastodon etc.

I’m not paying a $20 entry fee into a walled garden that wastes energy and water to have a text processor guess whether my arrangement of words resembles its training material closely enough.
Because AI boosters made people believe not using AI/not wanting to engage with AI generated output is an extremist position, so you must use AI, just read the output, and maybe rewrite it.
The real power move here would be to grab the domain name and run a free Mastodon instance off of it.
