I’m really curious. Has there been any research on this yet? Those shouting the loudest about pedophilia always seem to care the least or even be complicit themselves. They shout for surveillance, death penalties, castration, etc.

Its the externalization of their fight against urges they lose internally. Deep down they know they are bad ppl and that they did bad things but they cannot cope with that so they fight what makes them bad outside of themselves.
Feels like “I’m not bad because they’re even worse!” except they’re convicted pedophiles, so they can’t go much lower than themselves.
The only thing I can think of is that the rate of pedophilia amongst Catholic priests is approximately 2%, much higher than the general population. I would like to see more studies honestly (selfishly to confirm my biases and wave the number in right wingers’ faces)
Reaction Formation is a psych term that might interest you to read about. It’s one of Freud’s terms and has mixed evidence, but if memory serves is viewed as plausible as a defense mechanism.
