    It makes sense from a few angles:

    1. it removes that from Iran’s owning/use
    2. it establishes a beachhead right-there, where they can stage/launch from
    3. it gives them a base right in the crooked-straight, itself, to fight Iran’s closing of it…

    but

    1. it also makes them sitting-ducks, for Iran’s retaliation…

    ( I’m probably missing about 60 important dimensions of this, too )
