If the distros didn’t matter nobody would have strong preference. Instead there are Distro wars raging for years now, with plenty of casualties.

For me the preference came from reliability. I tried many distros and they never worked well. They either had bugs or didn’t work the way I wanted to. When I finally found what suits me, you can be damn sure I will tell everyone who listens that its the best distro on the whole planet… FOR ME. But I will gladly recommend it as well 😊

I think the combo hardware + kind of person can create many unique preferences… almost distro-count amounts of preferences 😀

I think smart home already proved that talking to our appliances doesn’t work. Imo LLMs will re-define how some people think, maybe lots of tasks will be delegated, but there will still be surfing, gaming, development, etc… at least in the next 10 years I don’t think desktop will change significantly.

Thanks for the summary, a few more questions if its ok: What do you mean by untrusted apps? Is it untrusted by system (by what mechanism) or by some central entity? Container apps, you mean flatpaks? And they get selective access, like there is some space for all flatpaks that is separated, or there is actually one space per app and they don’t see anything else?

Not sure if this is your problem. But if you use encrypted system partition + autologin, it should use the encryption passphrase to auto unlock the keyring after the autologin. That is probably what is happening when you remove the password, on the next login it sets the enc passphrase again, right? Why do you try to remove the password?

There is already so many answers so maybe you won’t even read this, but the main point I think is just start, this is not valid only for self hosting but for any project. Just start doing something, anything and the path will draw itself. Doesn’t need to be correct or perfect, it just needs to be started. Maybe you can start with the old laptop. Have you tried linux yet? Try it because that will be a basis for your self hosting. Just get the vibe, use it for a while, install shit on it. Go through tutorials. Maybe you realize it would be cool to try and host a simple website on it, just for funzies, just on the local network, you will learn so much on it and half way through you will have a dozen other ideas… I know this advice may be vague, but just go with the first thing you see and you think to yourself “this would be cool to have/do” 😊

You can create an accout using trow away gafam account. Create network, then invite yourself over email. When invited you can actually make an account using only passkey. So create second account with passkey, you can leave the invited-to network and create new one completely separately from the first one. You can delete the first account and the gafam account. Job done 😀 (and yes I did exactly this) 😀

Go for it. Give it a fair time, its a new system, some things may feel weird, but If you are willing to learn you will soon find it to be fine. Personally I would recommend some basic distro like fedora or linux mint. I would stay away from immutable systems like bazzite because I feel like with these systems people are limiting themselves too much (especially if you want to run a bunch of pirated content and stuff). The best course of action, try a few distros with live cd (i mean flash drive) to see what catches your eyes and if basic things work and only after that install your first system.

Used to use syncthing for files, now I just mount smb shares since I finally found how to do it on Android. Also kdeconnect is indispensable tool for me.

For me the transition from windows to gnome also was somewhat smooth, not it was also because when I didn’t know how to so something I just searched for “how to…” And found out. This surprised me in the ltt video, if they searched how to format flash to fat32 in Disks they would easily know that they need to add the partition, but instead of web searched they were jumping here and there chaoticaly. And its weird they are my generation and my generation knows how to google… Or maybe they are already brainwashed by using llms?
