Technically “layoffs” are different from “firing”.

Layoffs are typically high in number, wider reaching, reductions in force just to cut numbers.

Firings are targeted and generally (though they don’t have to be) with cause and have a procedure (performance reviews, improvement plans, warnings, etc.)

Not to say you can’t target a layoff to include all your lower performers, more to say that you can still fire someone outside of a layoff.

It was independent (not under Microsoft) until late 2018, and moving is hard. Even after MS bought it, they tried to keep it independent. It’s really only been the last few years where it’s gone downhill.

It’s also kinda the defacto standard for git hosting due to being a solid early player in the space. I assume that view will change as Codeberg and other rivals get more ingrained in the open source stack.

And honestly, that’s what they need to do. $450M is a cost of business expense.

As a manager, I don’t give a rats ass if you use AI. If you’re performing on par with your peers and you know and own your stuff, you’re safe.

Honestly, that last part is crucial and I’ve hd to remind some of my employees that using Claude is cool and all, but at the end of the day, you own it and I’m going to ask and assume you know it or we’re going to have a serious performance discussion. I can hire anyone to prompt Claude for me, what you bring to the table is what sets you apart.

This is how I went and what I’d recommend. But that said, it’s a bit of a steep learning curve as not everything in the self hosted/home lab community comes with helm charts.

Ignoring the de-Googled phones for a sec: I assume if you’re using a desktop, then the QR shows up and you have to drag out your phone to scan it in the camera app that then prompts to open the google play store. Dumb, but possible for people who have a phone with Android. What about those that don’t? Would you need a google account?

Now if it’s all on phone (using Chrome or Firefox or whatever) and pops up a QR code, you can’t scan it… but the browser would have to open the play store directly and thats a huge security no-no. The browser shouldn’t even know I have the Play Store.

I have a feeling the hundreds of us that are de-Googled ad just going to stop using these sites all together.

Minus the “Feed the Data to AI”, this is as it always has been. Never use company computers for personal work and if you have to use a company guest network, use a VPN, etc…

The only part that’s new here is the AI and I guarantee any company these people move to will do the same thing.

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter WHO is doing the hacking. A bad actor took over a large number of routers to do their bidding.

The only thing that makes it a TV IS the tuner… and honestly it’s not bad to have in an emergency or for local OTA stuff anyway. If I never use it then having it doesn’t matter.

True, but that’s going to really be pushing your network links just to recover. Realistically, something like ZFS or a RAID-6 with extra hot spares would help reduce the risks, but it’s still a non trivial amount of time. Not to mention the impact to normal usage during that time period.

Rebuild time is the big problem with this in a RAID Array. The interface is too slow and you risk losing more drives in the array before the rebuild completes.

Yeah, that design is dumb… but also they must have changed the design. I don’t have and don’t ever care to have one, so I’m not sure on that.
