The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison after being found guilty of plotting a military coup.
A panel of five Supreme Court justices handed down the sentence just hours after they had convicted the former leader.
They ruled he was guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
And the judges didn’t bend for the US sanctions. I hope this becomes an example for the world.
That was an absolutely fucking admirable sight to behold. So fucking happy they didn’t cave, and told the regime to eat shit and fuck off.
@ United States of America, that’s how you fucking do it.

only beat me to the meme by, uh, 16 hours

He’ll be 97 when he gets out, if he lives that long.
Good riddance.
Eh, wouldnt be hard to get it reduced tbh, I doubt he will actually stay there for 27 years. But Ill take what I can get
Think positive. He could be sentenced for more crimes he definitely committed

Will still be capped so even at 40 years max, his lawyers will be trying to get him released with 20 or less years in jail for good behavior or what not
FYI: South Korea’s former president got pardoned by her successor after her impeachment & removal & imprisonment. (The one back in 2017, not the recent 2024 one)
okay i’m taking notes. when we rebuild the republic, impeachments can’t be pardoned.
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
On the less positive side: one of the judges disagreed with everything, tens of thousands of supporter were supporting him in the street when the ruling happened, parliament allies are trying to make an amnesty law for him. I hope Brazilian people keep fighting for their democracy hard because the attacks will never stop.
As an American I find it difficult to understand how a working justice system can convict a criminal.
When Brazil respects democracy more than America.
We’re fucked, y’all.
We
Sounds like a 4% of world population problem.
From my perspective: So far the best SOAP that I ever watched. The episode yesterday with the gun sidestory was insane.
Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months, Trump was elected for his second term. Now who is bigger democracy? Maybe because Brazil plays REAL football?
Brazil showing the U.S. how it’s done.
If the US had done this after Jan 6, they would have saved themselves a lot of trouble.

a lot of trouble.
Americans:

Life in prison effectively. If only we could start putting our leaders in jail for their crimes.
Brazil gets to sit at the table with Iceland on the list of countries who jailed the people responsible for almost torpedoing thier own country. (In Icelands case, it was the bankers involved in 2008s financial crisis)
The right wing is still powerful over there. The Supreme court judge who voted to acquit bolsanaro is still a member of the court. All it takes is a broken judiciary to enable fascism. And Brazil could easily go in that direction again if the fascists win control again.
MORE OF THIS!
Meanwhile Merrick Garland somewhere is sitting happy as a pig in shit.
I remember all the people on reddit in 2020 who were loudly insisting that Garland was just biding his time and making sure that the case against Trump was ironclad before moving against him. I’d say lol but it’s obviously not funny.
It’s nice to see traitors held accountable for their actions. Maybe one day the US will take note.
If only The Big Short ended like this. Well done Brazil!
So basically Brazil is less of a banana republic than the USA.
